Stay Sun Safe….

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and can be caused by ultraviolet (UV) light or sunlight exposure and research has shown that most skin cancers can be prevented if people are protected from UV rays. Here are some tips for staying sun safe this summer…..

  • The best way to protect yourself from the sun is to ensure you use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF15 when outside this summer because besides cancer, other nasty side effects of overexposure include premature ageing!
  • People who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema, people with fair skin, and children require an SPF25 or higher.
  • Dont forget areas such as your nose, ears and lips. You can purchase stick applicators for these areas.
  • Try to cover up and stay out of direct sun light between 11am and 3pm as this is when the sun is at its hottest and even the highest SPF cannot fully protect you against rays.
  • If you are going swimming, make sure your sun lotion is water resistant. Even then, it is always a good idea to re apply after you have left the water. Especially if you have used a towel to dry yourself.
  • Make sure you apply a good thick layer. Many people only use a third of the required amount of cream to achieve the SPF on the bottle.
  • Remember to apply at least half an hour before you go into the sun as lotions normally take a while to work.
  • Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two and a half years but heat and bacteria can damage your creams so it is advised to replace them each year.

If you do get burnt this summer….

  • Try smothering the area in Aloe Vera
  • Drink plenty of water to rehydrate your skin
  • Taking a cool bath could help you feel more comfortable (do not however use soap on the burnt areas)
  • Dress in loose, comfortable clothes and keep the area out of the sun until it has begun to heal.
  • If you begin to peel, it may also itch! Try to avoid itching. Calamine lotion can help with this and use plenty of moisturiser to re-hydrate the skin.
  • Never try to pop blisters as this can lead to infection and scarring.
  • If you suffer from blisters, swelling, serious pain, fever, dizziness, or nausea you need to consult your GP as soon as possible. Sunburn can be very serious.

Have a nice summer, enjoy the lovely weather but remember to stay safe guys :)
